i AM this much of a nerd, ramblings, rockin' out

Memory lane with the aid of iTunes

One of the things I love about music is that it can totally take you back to another time, another place, sometimes so vividly it’s like really traveling back in time. Friday’s are the days I make my classroom rounds all over campus, so my iPod is at the ready to keep me company. As I walk and listen, I think of random memories that the songs bring up and smile and laugh at some, or frown and say “ugh” at others.  So I thought hmm let’s keep track of how many songs come up that make me think of a specific memory with iTunes on shuffle!! Here goes my classroom rounds music memories for Friday October 8. There were a few songs here and there that just didn’t make me think of squat so I left those out.

Shooting Hoops – G Love and Special Sauce: Mission something apartments in Phoenix, the summer time would have been summer of 1994 when I first bought that CD. My sister and I spent our summer days taking the bus over to the shopping center on Camelback Road, and I bought this G Love CD at the Best Buy there, my very first ever CD purchase!

Another Hostile Takeover – Hanoi Rocks : Reminds me of Benjimon, my fellow Hanoi Rocks fan who let me know about this recent HR album. Never met Ben in person, just became good friends on the interweb over our shared love of this great band, but one time we were able to gab on the phone as he needed some tech help so that was cool to be able to chat! Miss you Ben!

Sumthin for Nuthin – Motley Crue: Makes me think of the fall of 2002, I had just moved back to phoenix after a huge clusterfuck of a turn of events in Tucson, and remember driving all over town looking for jobs with this Crue CD in my car, my old red Kia Spectra!

Track 13 – The Mission Soundtrack: Makes me think of my dad having us watch the movie with him, I know we watched it as kids but I flash back to when we watched it at his house maybe about 6 or 7 years ago at their house in Phoenix. Haha, and my dad would pause it like every 5 seconds to give us some historical facts and tidbits of the time the movie took place. I love my dad!

She Talks to Angels – The Black Crowes: Fall of 2003 I think it was, I briefly dated this guy and we shagged to this song hehe. Up until recently I only remembered him as “guy with eyebrow ring”, which I know doesn’t make me sound all that great, but really my memory stinks!! Luckily I did remember eventually, Patrick!

Dos Botellas de Mezcal – Los Morros del Norte: Mexican karaoke at El Titanic restaurant in City Heights a couple of years ago!!! The karaoke guy would sing a song if none of the customers were singing to keep the mood going, and he’d ALWAYS sing this song. I’m guessing it the only one he felt comfortable doing, and he did sound pretty good I thought!

Che e cio – La Traviata: I think of being in my dorm room freshman year of college, I had to read the Lady of the Camellias for a French lit class I was taking. I found out it was the basis of my favorite opera, La Traviata, so I borrowed my dad’s copy of the opera on CD and listened to it whilst I read the play. I remember bawling my eyes out on that day bed in the dorm room when I was at the end!!

Rodeo Clowns – G. Love and Special Sauce: I think it was junior year of college, we were over at Matt, Trent and Cory’s house and somehow I ended up on the radio because of this song! I can’t remember if there was a contest and I had to call in, or since it was simply G Love related and I was a nutcase fan of their back then I called for something, who knows, but I remember like 5 minutes later we heard me on the radio!

Promise Me You’ll Remember – Harry Connick Jr: This was off the Godfather Part 3 soundtrack and I flash back to a night my senior year of high school, my boyfriend Anthony that year had this CD and we were in his car hanging out near his house listening to it and then an Eric Clapton CD for hours!

Goodie Two Shoes – Adam and the Ants: Woo hooo 80z All Stars!!! I think of going to see them on Thursdays at O’Malley’s Pub with Jenny in Tucson our Junior year of college through well after we graduated. Such fun times with them!!

Stardust – Frank Sinatra: Oddly enough even though this was Sinatra’s version it makes me think of Willie Nelson’s version of this same song and that flashes me back to when I was a kid and we lived in Ecuador. My parent’s had this tape and we’d listen to it in their Bronco going on trips around the countryside.

Heaven’s on Fire – KISS: I think of my honeylove Greg! I flash back to when we first started dating early in 2009, at the time I had just bought their Smashes, Thrashes, and Hits album and was listening to it a lot in my car. <3

Cuando Canto Mi Cancion – Ozomatli: I think of my Carlitos guey! 🙂 Back in the spring of 2006 Carlos introduced me to the music of one of the GREATEST bands ever, to this day I love to go see them in concert! Best live show ever!

Almost Paradise – Kenny Loggins: Probably the most RANDOM memory, I just flash back to driving late at night down 7th street in Phoenix, I must have been a senior in high school, near Thomas Road and this was on the radio. I dunno!

Anvil Chorus – Il Trovatore: Haha I think of one of my favorite movies by The Marx Brothers, A Night at the Opera. This is the opera the company is putting on when hilarity ensues.

Casi un bolero – Ricky Martin: I think of our apartment in Tucson sophomore year in college as I listened to this CD of Ricky Martin’s alot. That apartment was really the first time we were living on our own, I don’t think the dorm counts, here we were paying rent and splitting utilities and labeling the food in the fridge! 🙂 I love my roomies Alissa, Aubrey, and Becky!!

Cheek to Cheek – Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong: I think of when I lived in Tucson, would have been summer of 2002, driving to the gym at nights to swim some laps. I lived in my very apartment place of my own, no roommates! An old coworker of mine Bennett, super cool guy loved working with him,  gave me this Ella and Louis CD and I listened to it constantly that summer.

Viva Life on Mars – Robbie Williams: I think of meeting my friend Tommy at a diner for dinner a few years ago, and he gave me this CD to check out. I had never heard of Robbie Williams before but I really dug some of the songs, especially this one.

9th Symphony, Presto – Beethoven: I think of that awesome movie Immortal Beloved which was about Beethoven’s life, and the scene at the end with the girl goes to hear this symphony played, I love this piece! As i kept listening then I also flashed back to when I was about 10 in Virginia, we took piano lessons and a kiddie version of the “Ode to Joy” was one of my homework assignments.

Run – Collective Soul: I think of going with Brooke back in college to see Collective Soul in Tucson!! We were able to get backstage and got to meet the opening act, Fastball and went on their tour bus to hang out at one point. Then one of the roadie guys went to Brooke like hey, wanna shag, so we were like um we’re leaving haha!

Te Solte La Rienda – Mana: Junior year of college at our townhouse. I had just bought my first computer of my very own with some of my student loan money and was stoked! This Mana Unplugged CD was one of the first I ripped onto my computer.

Counterclockwise – Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers: This was from their Live CD that came out in 2005 and I think of reconnecting with Eric, and old friend from college I had lost touch with and we rocked out to this CD that summer.

Blind Faith – Warrant: Makes me think of driving to San Diego in April of 2002 to spend some time with my sister there. I had just lost my little Jenna and was a mess, just couldn’t even stand to be in Tucson at all so I just wanted to get away for a while. That trip to San Diego definitely planted the seed of wanting to live there, and look at me I do!
